Spring 2008 Enrichment/Instrumental Faculty

Shahla Atlas (Piano, Tuesday)

Shahla Atlas is a teacher, pianist, and composer.  Native to New York City, she has been seasoned by over 20 years of performing with chamber music ensembles and orchestras throughout New England, frequenting the premier concert halls of Lincoln Center.  Shahla is a multi-instrumentalist and an alumna of The Juilliard School of Music, where she studied Clarinet and Piano and took a special interest in digital music composition.  She is among few women in the fields of audio engineering and electroacoustic music, and performs as a keyboardist with various artists, bands and DJs around the city.  Thankful for her own early music education, her love for children moved her to teach. Shahla recently joined the Afterschool  Program at LREI and is on the faculty at The Diller-Quaile School of Music and The Bloomingdale School of Music.  

Mary Cherney (Flute, Recorder, Clarinet, Wednesday, Thursday)

Mary Cherney teaches woodwind instruments in the Afterschool program. She has been teaching at LREI for the last 18 years. In addition, she is the head of the music program at PS/IS 89 in Battery Park City. Mary's performing career has featured her in concerts, both of jazz and classical music, in the New York area as well as annual summer performances in France. Mary is currently performing and recording with 'Duo Nova Antigua' and pursuing a long time interest in Renaissance music.

Seth Eastman (Guitar, Wednesday)

Seth Eastman has been singing with and teaching young children since completing his Masters degree in Early Childhood Education at Bank Street. At LREI, Seth has been an associate teacher with Kindergarten and Second Grade, a co-teacher for the Fours with Sandy Wolkenburg and a Head Camp Counselor with Little Red Summer Camp. Seth has been playing guitar for fifteen years.

Dave Edson (Guitar, Monday, Tuesday)

Dave Edson has been teaching in the Afterschool and Summer Programs, and in various Lower School grades at LREI since 2003. His classes have included sports, science, music, and performing arts. In addition to teaching, Dave is a professional actor and musician. He has been playing guitar for 17 years, specializing in the blues. Dave's theater education includes a BFA from Ithaca College and extensive training with Anne Bogart's SITI Company. He always teaches things that he loves, so when a child feels the excitement of learning about a giant squid, experiencing teamwork, creating art or making someone laugh...there is no turning back!

Caroline Moore (Voice and Piano, Tuesday, Thursday)

Caroline Moore is a singer, actor, and pianist. She is a graduate of NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and studied voice at the Juilliard School. She has sung in concerts at the Metropolitan Opera, the Winter Garden, Carnegie Hall, B.A.M., the Paul J. Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center, and Alice Tully Hall. She was the score pianist for the documentary Favela Rising, and composed the score for the film Whatever Happened to Gavin Buckmaster. Caroline has been on the faculty at LREI since 2001, and is on the faculty at the Diller-Quaile School of Music. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Music and Music Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University.

Ledell Mulvaney (Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Clarinet, Monday)

Ledell Mulvaney is LREI's Lower School Music Teacher, Little Red Chorus Director, Middle School Chorus Director and 5th grade Drama Teacher. Ledell has a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY.   She has taught brass and woodwinds at Greenwich, Ct. Public Schools for ten years and  has been the featured performer on two CDs of "Further Notice", a jazz group based in Ct.  Ledell has written over 30 children's musicals and was a Fulbright Scholar from Yale University to Ghana, Africa.  She will work with each student on sound, breathing, posture, embouchure (mouth position) position, fingering, as well as reading music and care of the instrument.  

Jason Rabinowitz (Piano, Monday, Wednesday)

Jason Rabinowitz has a BFA in Composition from the Conservatory at Purchase College. He has been teaching for nine years, five of which were in the New York City Public School system. In addition to teaching, Jason is a music producer and director whose songs have been featured in numerous films. Jason is from New York and is the founder and main composer for a New York City underground rock sensation called the Bloodsugars .

Vincent Scialla (Drums, Monday, Wednesday)

Vincent Scialla's achievements include the Off-Broadway productions and performances with Glen Velez, Anthony Davis, Yale Symphony and the Brooklyn Conservatory Percussion Ensemble. US Dept. of Defense tours have taken him to the Caribbean, Middle East and Egypt. He is a student of Morris "Arnie" Lang, and can been seen performing in New York City with his electro-acoustic world music group, Mission: on Mars . Vin teaches at Church Street Music School and Elizabeth Irwin High School.

David Ullmann (Guitar, Thursday, Friday)

David Ullmann is a guitarist and composer. He graduated from the New School with a BFA in Jazz Performance in 1999. David has been teaching in Afterschool at LREI for eight years and his greatest joy is hearing a first performance of "Hot Cross Buns". He is also actively involved in the NYC jazz scene.

Peter Yarin (Piano, Thursday)

Peter Yarin is a pianist, composer and teacher. An early student of classical music, Peter discovered jazz as a teenager, which he pursued in studies at NYU. Soon he was performing weekly at Birdland and in other jazz clubs in New York City. Currently, Peter performs with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, a 1920's/dixieland big band (recently at the JVC Jazz Festival and on "Conan O'Brien"). As a composer, Peter is at work on several theatre projects: his work has been heard at Raw Impressions Music Theatre and will be performed at an upcoming concert at the Kaufman Center. Peter is a faculty member of the Diller-Quaile School of Music; he has also served as a teaching artist within programs at Appalachian State University, the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and was music director of the National Dance Institute's China Exchange program.
