The Diversity Bulletin Board is located in the lobby of the Sixth Avenue building. This visual display welcomes all who enter and provides a glimpse into our conversations, commitment, and work around diversity and community. The board is sometimes overlooked, perhaps because it is always there. I urge you to take a few minutes each week to see the kind of work students are doing around diversity here at LREI.
Each Lower and Middle School class and the specialist teachers are responsible for showcasing, for a week, the diversity discussions, projects, and themes they are addressing and celebrating through classes in social studies, literacy, science, math, and the arts. For example, you might see self-portraits done by first graders that show their unique facial features and skin color. Lower School Spanish teacher, Julie Sterling worked with a group of advanced Spanish speaking students to create a graph of the various different languages spoken by students in the Lower School.
While conversations about diversity and social justice happen all the time and are incorporated into the curriculum, it is often difficult to pinpoint when these discussions will take place, how long they will take, and what level of participation the students will have. It is for this reason the bulletin board was created. I encourage you to take a look at our Diversity Bulletin Board, or stop by the library where you can find a collection of past Diversity Board displays. You’ll always find something interesting and thought-provoking there! It can also be a great discussion-starter for conversations with your children.
