Upcoming Diversity Events

The LREI community would like to extend its great thanks to everyone who helped to make the Sixth Avenue Reception of Visibility: Lesbian and Gay People We Love a huge success.

It was a wonderful evening filled with fun, reflection, lots of laughter and even a few tears.

If you were unable to attend the reception, we invite you to view the photos with your children, family and friends.

The exhibition will remain on display in the Sixth Avenue Auditorium until Friday, March 14th, 2008.

WHO & WHAT:

The idea is simple—as a member of the LREI community, we invite you to submit a photo of yourself and/or your children, with someone in your life who is lesbian or gay. For those who are straight, it is a chance to show support and love for lesbian or gay family members or friends. For those who are lesbian or gay, it is a chance to share stories and experiences about visibility. Prior exhibits have included between 80 and 100 photos of lesbian and gay faculty and administrators, parents, and high school students. There were friends, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, godparents, and alumni, as well as photographs of Elisabeth Irwin, founder of the school, with her partner and their children.

WHY:

The exhibition is a part of LREI’s ongoing commitment to fighting prejudice and supporting and celebrating diversity and social justice. This is an opportunity to teach our children that all people deserve respect and the ability to be seen and heard, to be themselves. The exhibit will be woven into the curriculum and discussed by LREI students in every grade.

HOW:

Submitting Photos and Captions: You can submit an old photo, several individual photos, or take a new photo. Please include your name, contact information, your child’s name and grade with a few lines naming and describing the people in the photo. Leave unframed photos and captions with the receptionist, or email digital photos and captions if you prefer to Visibility@lrei.org.

SEED
6:00-9:00PM, MS Art Room

SEED work invites the engagement of head, heart, and soul. Participants examine inner and outer ways in which systems bear on lives inside and outside of school. SEED work develops ways of understanding complex relations between self and system with regard to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability/disability and cultural experience.

Continue your lifelong learning by:

  • Unpacking the origin of our beliefs by reviewing conscious and unconscious messages we give and receive.
  • Exploring assumptions and perceptions we have about others.
  • Sharing stories from our personal experiences.
  • Participating in interactive and experiential dialogues in a safe supportive, nurturing atmosphere.
  • Sharing readings, viewing films and exchanging ideas and information.
  • Eating delicious food from a variety of backgrounds (dinner will be served at every meeting).

Make a commitment to join LREI’s monthly SEED parent group.

LREI 101

Thank you, families, for attending LREI 101: An Orientation for Parents.  Families from all three divisions found it very helpful to learn about the structure of our school, to hear more about parent involvement, and to understand the extent to which we proactively incorporate aspects of diversity and community into K-12th Grade Curriculum.   Click below to download the LREI 101 Parent Guidebook.  Along with more information about ways to understand LREI and deepen your involvement in school life, you will read about various policy statements and the PA committees/affinity groups.
