The Mission of the LREI School Library

The mission of the school library is to support the progressive educational goals of Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School. The library seeks to implement, enrich and support the innovative educational program at LREI through access to resources and development of curriculum; and to improve reading and research skills through teacher training, collaboration, and traditional library education practices. The library also seeks to encourage reading as a pleasurable, recreational activity by providing a large selection of age appropriate, engaging fiction and non-fiction, and by presenting on-going educational and entertaining library programming to students of all ages. We take seriously our charge of creating life-long readers.

Our Special Space

At LREI, the library is often viewed as the heart of our school. The library is split between the Sixth Avenue and Charlton Street campuses. The Sixth Avenue Library serves students in grades preK-8th. The Charlton Street Library collects materials appropriate for students in grades 9-12. All students have access to both libraries. Both libraries are comfortable and functional--sun-lit central areas with quiet spaces for study and direct connection to the school’s computer network.

Our Librarians

A team of three professional librarians staffs our library. Lower School Librarian Stacy Dillon works with students in grades 1-4, presenting story times and teaching beginning research lessons. Jennifer Hubert Swan, Middle School/Coordinating Librarian works with grades 5-8 guiding research in the library and presenting book talks in the classroom, while coordinating the efforts of all three divisions. High School Librarian Karyn Silverman works to show students the plethora of useful information available on the Internet, and collaborates with teachers on a regular basis to create meaningful curriculum-based research lessons. All three librarians are MLS degreed professionals. Our library assistant Jesse Karp, works with the 4's, Early Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes, reading and discussing stories and beginning to familiarize them with how the library works.

Schedule

The library is open on a daily basis while school is in session. Students may come to the library for scheduled lessons or on their own to select books or to study. The library is also available to students during lunch and recess. The schedule is as follows:

Sixth Avenue campus
Monday-Thursday: 8:30 – 5:30, Friday: 8:30-3:30

Charlton Street campus
