High School Summer Reading List

LREI Summer Reading 2007

For summer reading, in addition to departmental assignments, all students are expected to read one book from the below list of faculty recommendations. During the second week of school, you will meet in book circles with the faculty member(s) who recommended the book you read.

The below descriptions are just to get you started; please take a look at the books themselves--many of which will be available at the Summer Reading Fair on May 24--before making your final decision!

Bechdel, Alison Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic memoir
This memoir in graphic novel format examines Alison's relationship with her late father, and the unfinished business he left behind.
Note:paperback will be released in June

Bryson, Bill A Walk in the Woods memoir/travel
Witty and wise, this is the chronicle of comic genius Bill Bryson, who decided to walk the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine.

Didion, Joan Year of Magical Thinking memoir/play
Didion's powerful memoir recently opened as a one woman show on Broadway. Whether you read the play or the memoir--or both--you will be drawn into didion's painful but beautiful account of an unimaginably terrible year in which her only child fell into a coma and her husband died.

Gershman, Suzie C'est La Vie memoir
Suzy had always fantasized about moving to Paris with her husband, but when he dies unexpectedly, she decides to fulfill their dream alone--and does so with humor and tips about everything French.

Herbert, Frank Dune science fiction
Dune is one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written--and possibly the best.

Krauss, Nicole History of Love fiction
In this acclaimed bestseller, a long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness.

McCarthy, Cormac The Road fiction
Profoundly dark, told in spare, searing prose, The Road is a post-apocalyptic masterpiece of a father and son's journey through a blighted world.

Millar, Mark and Steve McNiven Civil War graphic novel

Mistry, Rohinton A Fine Balance fiction
This magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India in 1975.

Orringer, Julie How to Breathe Underwater story collection
Beautiful prose delineates tragedy and coming-of-age for nine young women, leavened with humor and truth.

Roberts, Gregory David Shantaram fiction
This autobiographical novel tells the story of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay, a hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, actors and exiles.

Setterfeld, Diane The Thirteenth Tale fiction
