Lower School |
Facts about the Lower School
|
- There are thirteen classes in the Lower School: a class of Fours, an Early Kindergarten, two Kindergartens, three First Grades, and two Second, Third and Fourth Grades. Depending on age group and classroom space, classes vary in size from sixteen to twenty-three students.
- The Lower School has 250 students from the ages of four to ten.
- There are two full-time teachers in each class, a Head and an Associate Teacher, in addition to part time student teachers. There is a total of twenty-one Specialist Teachers.
- Special programs include: Spanish, Technology, Art, Woodworking, Music, Movement, Gymnastics and Physical Education. These specials form an important part of every class’ weekly schedule.
- Curriculum continuity and enrichment are provided by math, science, technology and literacy coordinators.
- Learning specialists offer regular small group support where needed.
- Formal reports and parent/teacher conferences each occur twice a year. On an informal basis, teachers and parents meet frequently.
- The Lower School has a full-time nurse as well as a three-day school psychologist.
- School begins at 8:30AM for all Lower School students. The school day ends at 2:45PM for the Fours, Early Kindergartners and Kindergartners and at 3:00PM for the First through Fourth Graders.
- A hot lunch is served daily and includes vegetarian selections as well as natural, unprocessed foods. Daily morning snacks contain organic milk, healthy cookies/crackers, cheese and fruit.
- Students enjoy a shared middle/elementary school library as well as an early childhood reading room. Classes visit the Reading Room for weekly library sessions.
- Early childhood outdoor play takes place on a well-equipped rooftop playground. Elementary students make use of the Houston Street Ball Field for recess times. Recess and outdoor play are a part of every school day.
- Neighborhood and city trips occur frequently. These are always safe, carefully planned and form the basis for curriculum inquiry. Parents are often invited to participate as chaperones.
- An extensive and family-friendly Afterschool Program is available to children in the Lower School and includes a range of Enrichment Classes as well as Childcare until 6:00PM. A welcoming Early Bird Program is open to children at 7:45AM each morning. Low-fee childcare is also offered for all evening school events.
- LREI has a well-articulated security and emergency plan. Arrival and dismissal times are monitored by faculty and staff members, and families are provided with identification cards which are checked at school entrances.
