Literary
Evening 2005 - On December
8, the LREI Literary Committee
presented “Voices from
the Gulf Coast, A Night of
New Orleans in New York.” Six
authors read from works of
fiction, poetry and essays
set in and around that most
exotic and mysterious of American
cities, whose contributions
to the rich melting pot of
American culture are perhaps
unparalleled.
Book Week - Every year, the parent-led
Literary Committee works tirelessly
to put an author in each and
every classroom, Kindergarten
through Twelfth Grade during
LREI's annual Book Week, which
traditionally takes place the
first week in December. This
year, the Middle School enjoyed
several humorous and interesting
author visits that generated
great discussions and lots
of laughter. In the Eighth
Grade, students were treated
to a dual performance from
hipster authors Lauren Meckling
and Laura Moser. The two young
best college friends-turned-authors
read aloud from their book,
The Rise and Fall of a 10th
Grade Social Climber, about
a Texas teen who must learn
to negotiate the complicated
waters of the New York private
school scene. In the Sixth
Grade, students were awed by
Mercer Warriner, the latest
incarnation of Carolyn Keene,
author of the famous Nancy
Drew mysteries, and in the
Seventh Grade, New Yorker essayist
and author Adam Gopnik shared
a chapter from his first novel
for kids, The King in the
Window.
A literary good time was had
by all, and students who wanted
to follow their visit up by
curling up with a good book
could visit the two day Book
Fair, also organized by the
Literary Committee, and purchase
a new title to read over the
holiday break. Both students
and faculty alike are wondering
how the phenomenal committee
will top this year's fantastic
visits and bountiful Book Fair!
