Little Red Summer Camp takes place on the campus of LREI, located at 272 Sixth Avenue on the corner of Bleecker Street. Subways: 1 to Houston Street or A, C, E, D, F, or V to the West 4th Street Station. Musical Theatre Workshop takes place at LREI's Performing Arts Center at 40 Charlton St.
LREI Institute takes place at LREI's Elisabeth Irwin High School at 40 Charlton Street, between Sixth Avenue and Varick Street. Subway: 1 to Houston Street.
Indoor activities are held in the classrooms, art rooms, reading room, woodworking shop, computer lab, and cafeteria of LREI. Indoor spaces are air-conditioned and brightly lit.
Physical arts activities take place in the Performing and Physical Arts Space, Lower/Middle School Auditorium, Music Room, and LREI's High School gymnasium and the Thompson Street Athletic Center.
For outdoor activities, we use our rubberized rooftop playground, Downing Street Playground, Houston Street Park, and Carmine Street Playground.
Swimming takes place in a heated indoor pool at the 14th St. YMCA. Swimming consists of a 30-40 minute lesson taught by three fully certified instructors, followed by free swim time. We take a private bus to the facilities. An on-site lifeguard, as well as the swim instructors and several camp counselors supervise all swim time. We maintain a counselor-to-camper ratio of 1:3 for five-six year-olds and 1:5 for seven year-olds and up. Note that swimming is offered to children ages 5 and up as a choice class which may be selected at registration. Not all children choose to or are able to participate in swimming, due to limited availability.
Transportation on field trips and to and from swimming is by private air-conditioned bus, equipped with a bathroom. For travel over 30 minutes, an age-appropriate video may be shown, such as an episode of Winnie the Pooh or Arthur for ages four-six and Wallace and Grommit or Toy Story for ages seven and up.

The People |
Campers
Children in Summers at LREI come from public and independent schools across the New York City area, as well as from other states and countries. Over 75% of the children in our programs attend schools other than LREI during the year. Our goal is to create a safe environment where children can form new friendships and feel themselves to be part of a camp community. We welcome a diverse population, including children who are visiting the United States and those who have special needs that we are equipped to accommodate.
Faculty
All teachers on the camp staff have experience with and a genuine love for working with children. Some are full-time teachers at LREI or other independent schools. Some are Associate teachers or teachers from the Afterschool program at LREI. Others are professional artists, actors, and dancers who have years of experience sharing their creativity with children. Nearly 90% of the Head Counselors in Little Red Summer Camp are returning teachers.

Health & Safety |
Safety is our first priority, no matter what activity children are engaged in or where we are. In addition to having a certified Health Director on site, all of our Head and Associate Counselors are CPR and First Aid certified. We bring water, first aid supplies, an emergency contact list, cell phones and walkie talkies to all parks and field trips away from the LREI campus.
We strive to meet the needs of all children. If your child takes medication, is physically challenged, or has special health needs, please let us know when submitting registration and medical forms so that we can make plans to accommodate them in the most appropriate way possible. Top |

| Lunch |
We provide tasty, healthy meals with a hot entrée Monday through Thursday. Meals include fruit, vegetables, an entrée with a vegetarian option, as well as sandwich fixings, and an occasional dessert such as a Tofutti Cutie or Ice Pop (no added sugar). Campers should bring a packed lunch that does not require refrigeration on Fridays for Field Trips. We also provide a snack of fruit, crackers, juice, and water throughout the day. A lunch menu will be available on the first day of camp.
We are equipped to accommodate special food needs (i.e. vegetarian, vegan, and lactose intolerance). If your child has special dietary needs or is allergic to certain foods, please be sure to alert us and provide specific information on the medical and registration forms. If your child has a severe food allergy which may be life threatening, we require an emergency action plan and conversation with our Health Director in advance of the camp season.
Please note that we are a "peanut aware" institution . In order to help ensure that all children feel safe and welcome here, including those with severe nut allergies, we do not offer food products which contain nuts or seeds and we ask that you refrain from bringing them into the building.

All camp groups travel off-site weekly for Field Trip Fridays. We take air-conditioned, chartered buses to age-appropriate locations for activities that are educational and lots of fun. The camp day is 9:00am-4:00pm for all children, including those in half day home groups. Our priority is to take trips that give campers an opportunity to be in a natural setting or museum worth exploring as a group.
In order to maintain a very safe adult to camper ratio, additional teaching specialists accompany home groups on field trips.
Ages four-six go on field trips to such places as the Central Park Zoo and Carousel, the New York Botanical Gardens, the Children's Museum of Manhattan and the New York Hall of Science.
Ages seven-ten go to places such as the Bronx Zoo, Liberty Science Center, New York Hall of Science, Chelsea Piers and Central Park for a field day.
Note that the last field trip of the camp season will take place on Wednesday, July 30 th rather than Friday, August 1 st. Friday, August 1 st will be Camp Share Day.
