The Fours Schedule

The camp day begins and ends in the home group room with circle time, which may include a game or song, a discussion of what will be happening in the day and the week, and time for children to get to know one another. Campers are also in their home groups for scheduled outdoor play, activity stations, arts & crafts, music and cooking time.

Choice classes (indicated on the schedule as Choice Class A and Choice Class B ) take place outside of the home group room and are open to the participation of children in all Fours groups. They are taught by S pecialists, Head Counselors and select Associate Counselors. Classes are chosen upon registration, in advance of the camp season. Classes meet for an hour each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday over the course of a two-week session. Different classes are offered each class block and each session. The following is a sample of classes offered to Fours: Dress-Up Club, Summertime Chefs, Mini Monets, Soccer, Gymnastics and Book About Me.   Children registered for half days select one morning class per session. Children in a full day group select one morning and one afternoon class per session.

Fours Choice Class Description

Art Explorations
Eric Losh

Each time we meet, we will play with a different kind of material or process to discover some of the infinite ways we can make things. Classes will focus on textured collage, clay, printmaking, and multiple ways of applying paint. This class is for all curious kids who like to explore the world through color, texture, and shape.

Bubble Works
Bonnie Maloney
We’ll make bubbles big and small…bubbles, bubbles, we’ll blow them all!  We’ll mix our own bubble solution and make our own bubble wands too!  We’ll experiment with using small wands and partner wands, and blowing bubbles both indoors and out.

Cool Summer
Jenell Rubin

Even if you love the sunshine, some of the best things to do in summer are all about staying cool. We’ll make a waterslide, whip up a fruit smoothie, make our own fabulous sun hats, do science experiments with ice, and maybe even devise our own stay-super-cool machine.

Count Me In
Bonnie Maloney
We’ll discover how fun counting can be through stories, games, and songs.  We will count objects around the classroom, explore the ideas of more and less, and take number walks!

Creative Dance
Ellie Goudie-Averill
We will explore time, space, and energy together through creative dance games, songs, and activities.  The class will include lessons on shape, pathway, and rhythm.  Children will gain more mastery over their already expressive bodies and learn about working together with a group.

Exploration: Color
Elizabeth Blanchard

Hmm... What’s the difference between violet and lilac?  Or olive and evergreen?  In this class, we will explore creative ways to mix colors by creating custom playdough and paints.  After naming their original colors, campers will use their pickle green and banana yellow to create original artwork.  Collaboration and sharing will come into play when we work together on murals and tie-dye projects.

Forts and Castles
Anne Sorce
Using boxes and fabric, campers will work together to make their own forts and castles - large enough to play in!  Bottles and other found objects will become props for our imaginative play.

Gardening
Jenell Rubin

Do you have a green thumb?  Love flowers?  Then, come and learn about different types of plants and how to care for them.  We will plant flowers from seeds, learn about how vegetables grow, and visit neighborhood gardens.

How Does the Garden Grow?
Bonnie Maloney
Come and enter the wonderful world of gardening where we will plant and care for our own seeds, marvel over leaves seen through a hand lens, and visit a nearby community gardening space.

Let’s Make a Mess
Randi Reinhold
Do you like to play with slime and goo?  Do you become so involved in an art project that you wind up with paint on your elbows and glue on your hands?  Do you ever wish someone would just say, “Hey! Let’s make a mess!”  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you won’t want to miss out on this spectacularly messy opportunity!  In this class, we will get down and dirty using a variety of slimy, mushy, gloppy, and sometimes even edible materials.  Smocks are included, and yes, we will be cleaning up our messes with as much gusto as we created them.

Mother Goose Songs
Ian Bentley
Children will learn songs, rhymes, and stories based on popular nursery rhymes.  We’ll draw pictures, play games, and engage in dramatic play with roles from favorite folk tales and fairy tales.

Music and Movement
Ian Bentley

Songs, games, and stories introduce basic musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and dynamics.  Children will explore different styles of music through listening, dancing, singing, and visual art.

Old MacSamson Had a Farm
Samson Baker

Pull up your overalls and come explore all the fun things going on in the barnyard!  Whether it’s a wheelbarrow race, discovering and making new animal friends like cotton ball sheep, painting with corncobs, or just having a good ole-fashioned sing-a-along, you can be sure that old MacSamson’s Farm will be the most fun place you’ll visit all summer!  Ee-I-Ee-I-Oh!!

Play With Your Food
Claire Rose
Are your parents always telling you not to play with your food?  Then this is the class for you!  A mixture of art, science, and fun - all with food.

Primary Colors
Liz Otte

Come and explore the colors of the rainbow through cooperative games, treasure hunts, art projects, and more.

Singing the Story
Meghann Erskine

Using music, movement, and improvisation, we will recreate favorite stories as well as writing and acting out our own.

Summertime Chefs
Samson Baker

We’ll mix and mash, stir and shake, wrap and bake our way to delicious treats that would impress the world’s finest chefs…and make our tummies happy!

Tea Party
Laura Araman

Come have a tea party with us.  We’ll get ready for our tea party by making fancy hats and jewelry.  Then we’ll get to the tasty part of having a tea party by making tea sandwiches and shortbread.  We’ll even try different types of tea and yummy tea time drinks.  Pinkies up!

Tumbling
Natalie Bevacqua
This class will be an introduction to gymnastics, especially geared to Fours.  We will learn ways to stretch, gymnastics positions, and skills for floor exercise, vault, and balance beam.  Some of the skills we’ll try will be jumps, rolls, and handstands.

Zone Soccer
Seth Eastman
Zone Soccer is a fun way to help children explore the game without bumping into each other!  Each child will decorate their own “zone” or square with sidewalk chalk from which to play the game.  Campers will practice skill building including trapping and passing in a non-competitive, supportive environment.
