All About Animals

Do you want to share and learn about the biggest, fastest, strongest, and smallest animals ever? If you do, this class is for you. We will use games, books and imaginative play as we learn about animals we may see every day and those we may never meet nose to nose.
All Things Paper

This class will center around the many, many crafts you can make with just paper. From origami to papier-mache, we will explore the possibilities presented by paper. We will even learn how to recycle and create our own paper.
Animal Art

Cats and dogs and horses are fun animals to draw. But how about binturongs or basilisks or colugos? Kudus or kinkajous anyone? In this course, we will not only learn about some of the world’s most endangered and most unusual animals but through understanding of their shapes, textures, colors, and forms, we will learn how to draw them and use them as subjects in our artwork. Students will be encouraged to try various artistic approaches to image making including drawing, painting, and collage.
Around the Playground

Campers will play group games, enjoy free time, and explore a different playground each day. These will include Houston Ballfield, Downing Street Park, the LREI rooftop playground, and Carmine Street playground.
Backyard Games

The focus of this course will be on campers participating in fun activities while they move and practice athletic skills. The classes are designed to meet any level of athletic experience. We’ll learn games like Red Light-Green Light, Mother May I?, Star Wars Tag, Freeze Tag, and many more.

In this class, we will use our hands, feet, and bodies to play some of our favorite ball games. We will play outdoor classics such as kickball, wiffleball, four square, crab soccer, Not in my Backyard, and SPUD.

We will learn the basics of ballet in a fun and creative environment. Starting in a circle, we will progress to “barre” work and travel across the floor with locomotor steps.
Block Party

Let’s have fun together around the blocks! Building is an excellent way for children to begin to understand structure, three-dimensionality, teamwork, and to figure out how they may create what they imagine. Campers will work on individual and group constructions in this class.
Broadway Beginners

We will learn songs from different Broadway musicals and work together to choreograph our own physical movements to accompany music and song. Learn how to have fun, build confidence, and be a star on the stage!
Buggin’ Out

Do you love bugs? We will get to know some different creepy crawlies and watch how they move, see what they do in different environments, and learn what makes them so special. Get ready to explore creatures in an up-close and personal way.
Catch the Wind

For future aviators, bird watchers, and just plain curious kids, come and learn about things that fly from airplanes to birds. We’ll build our own models and then see if we can make them fly!
Clayworks

Campers will explore a wide variety of clayworking processes and techniques such as coil building, slab construction, mosaics, and relief. We will look at the work of ceramic artists, both historical and contemporary, and perhaps even find inspiration in their work for our own.

Campers will need all of their physical and creative energy as they work together to brainstorm, blueprint, and build. Using cardboard, duct tape, and aluminum foil, we’ll construct castles, boxcars, mazes, and tunnels…maybe even robot costumes! The only thing more fun than building our site up will be breaking it all down!

This class will be an exploration in the secret fun that construction paper has to offer as both a collage and sculptural medium. Combining cut-and-folded creations with drawn elements, students will be able to create anything they imagine, from greeting cards to dioramas to far-off alien landscapes.

Drawing from Nature

Travel around the neighborhood to different playgrounds and parks, drawing and playing, and surrounded by as much nature as we can find! Children will each have their own sketchbooks to record their experiences. We will work in different mediums drawing natural objects and any animals that sit still long enough!

Kids. . . have you ever turned into a powerful superhero or a magical fairy (or even a dancing leopard)? How did you do it? In this creative play class, we will use fabulous costumes, props, and music to imagine ourselves as all sorts of amazing creatures. Together we will discover how monkeys would celebrate a birthday (in the forest with a banana cake maybe?) . . . and how grown-ups might operate a restaurant (calling all chefs, customers, and wait staff), and many other awesome scenarios. Edible Art

What’s better than a beautiful mosaic or an elaborate sculpture? Art you can eat! Campers can work up quite an appetite at camp, so in this class all the art projects will be made using healthy, edible materials. Fruits and veggies, cereal and the occasional cookie will become fish, elephants, and flowers that we can eat when we’re done. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!
Exploration Paint

Campers will explore painting and experiment with color as they create their own art using a variety of painting tools. We will explore painting with fingers, sponges, marbles, vegetables, and more!
From Scratch

For kids who like to create in the kitchen, campers will discover what it means to make food “from scratch”. Without the help of pre-made mixes or doughs, we’ll try our hand at making fresh bread, pasta, and many other tasty treats. And then, of course, we’ll eat them!

Have you always liked digging in the dirt? Do you find yourself asking how do flowers grow? Well, then join this class and help make Little Red Summer Camp’s “Garden on the Roof”. We will learn about worms, soil, and different kinds of plants. We will also learn about terrariums and make our own!

Let’s Make a Mess

Do you like to play with slime and goo? Do you become so involved in an art project that you wind up with paint on your elbows and glue on your hands? Do you ever wish someone would just say, “Hey! Let’s make a mess!” If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you won’t want to miss out on this spectacularly messy opportunity! In this class, we will get down and dirty using a variety of slimy, mushy, gloppy, and sometimes even edible materials. Smocks are included, and yes, we will be cleaning up our messes with as much gusto as we created them.

Are you a party animal? Who isn’t? In this class, campers will help plan and prepare for parties! Will we throw a costume ball or a slumber party? Maybe a pizza party or a dance party? It’s up to you. Campers will choose what type of party they want to have and then make it happen. We will make fun invitations, party hats, decorations, and snacks for the parties too.
Making Mosaics

The process of making mosaics is similar to piecing a puzzle together - the individual parts make the whole artwork what it is. We will build mosaics out of torn paper, dry pasta, beads, buttons, and pieces of wood. These materials will give us lots of opportunities to play with shapes, colors, and textures and to depict people, things, and experiences that are special to us. Together we will explore historical and contemporary mosaics as a springboard for our own creations.
Making Musical Instruments

Using familiar materials such as tissue and soap boxes, coffee cans, and paper plates, we will create instruments such as sand blocks, shakers, drums, and guitars. Come create, play, and listen as we put music and art together to make our own musical instruments.
Mandarin

Focusing on themes and stories of interest to children of this age, we’ll work on associated language skills and vocabulary through story-writing and story-telling, art projects, and games. In physical games like “Laoshi Shuo” (teacher says), students learn to follow and give directions while their minds and bodies are engaged. Campers will have the opportunity to practice communicating with each other in cooperative group activities. We will learn and sing songs too! Campers will be exposed to simplified Chinese characters, with emphasis placed on reading and writing in pinyin. Each session will build on vocabulary and skills learned in the previous session, but can also stand alone. Students with and without previous exposure to Mandarin are welcome!

What do the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Central Park have in common? They’re all in New York City! Each class will begin with a story about one of our city’s unique landmarks. Then, kids will participate in a creative project based on that landmark. Afterwards, as a group, we will use our artwork to decorate the halls of camp and transform it into our very own version of New York City!

In this class, we will investigate ancient creatures like dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, and pteradons and their links to living animals. Then, we’ll express our discoveries through art and creative play.

Children will make a different kind of puppet each class using fabric, wood, paper and beads. Puppets may take the form of animals, families, and imaginary friends. Then, we will have time to play with them and put on short puppet shows for each other at the end of class.

In this class, we will work together to write and record our own song. Campers will learn the basics of songwriting and will get a glimpse of the exciting process of recording. At the end of the class, we will have a recording that everyone can be proud of (and take home)!
Space Travel

Do you want to be an astronaut? Do you dream of someday traveling to outer space? In this class, we will build a spaceship, make space suits, learn about space, and take a pretend trip to the moon.
Swimming
We swim in an indoor, heated swimming pool in collaboration with the 14th St. YMCA. Swimming will consist of a 30 to 40-minute lesson taught by three fully-certified instructors, followed by free swim time. Campers will take a short ride by private bus to the pool. All swim time will be supervised by an on-site lifeguard as well as three fully-certified swim instructors and several camp counselors. The program maintains a 1:3 staff-to-camper ratio for Fives and Sixes.
Think Big Art

Calling all future architects and artists! We’ve been commissioned by the Summer Camp Arts Foundation to create enormous works of art to display around the building for all to enjoy. Campers will collaborate at every stage of the design, creation, and installation of these gigantic art projects. Life-size papier-mache animals, a jungle canopy hanging from the ceiling, a giant color spectrum...anything is possible when we THINK BIG!
Top Secret Mission

Each class, campers will receive a new mission. The only way to complete the mission will be to work together, sometimes in small groups and sometimes as a whole class. Our missions will take us outside of the classroom to look for clues or to leave secret clues of our own as we explore camp and the neighborhood around us.

We will engineer the wackiest, goofiest, most creative sprinklers, fountains, and hoses imaginable . . . and then we’ll test them out! Bring your swimming suits, thinking caps, and blueprints. We’ll supply the whozits, whatzits, gadgets, buckets, gizmos, and toys!
