A class for children who love to draw cartoon and comic book characters! In the beginning, we will focus on the two basic elements of a story: characters and plot. We will talk about how stories are communicated to the reader with and without words. Toward the end of the session we will make 3D glasses from scratch and experiment by drawing with red/blue pencils to create images that jump from the page!
Adobe Photoshop for Beginners

This course is for students interested in learning how to create artwork using the computer. We will be learning how to draw, paint, color, and edit original art using the software that many professional artists use.

Arts of Mexico

Each class will be a different project focusing on the art of Mexico. From folk art traditions to fine art, we will take inspiration from Diego Rivera to create murals, Frida Kahlo to make fantastic self-portrait watercolors, and hammer out our own tin ornaments.

We will look at and discuss the artwork of historical and contemporary artists then explore a wide variety of drawing and painting mediums in the studio. Students will learn to draw/paint what they see and work intuitively as well as from a conceptual point of departure.

Jump off of the couch and into the game! Every day we will play a different game show, complete with mind-bending trivia, crazy hosts, and physical challenges. For the grand finale, the class will try to stump the teachers when they design their own game show that they will host themselves.

Do you have a green thumb? Love flowers? Then, come and learn about different types of plants and how to care for them. We will plant flowers from seeds, learn about how vegetables grow, and visit neighborhood gardens.
Gymnastics

In this class, we will explore the body’s strength and flexibility through exciting and challenging gymnastics skills. In a fun and supportive environment, students will work on floor, balance beam, and vault to increase coordination, focus, and self-confidence. Every class will have stretching, introduction to new skills or techniques, and a circuit that involves multiple apparatuses. We will focus on joining skills together to create sequences and creative “routines”. This class is open to gymnasts of any level or experience.

We will make our own clay beads and explore different string textures, shapes, and colors. With a few materials and a little invention, the possibilities for a young jewelry designer are endless!

Making Mosaics

The process of making mosaics is similar to piecing a puzzle together - the individual parts make the whole artwork what it is. We will build mosaics out of torn paper, dry pasta, beads, buttons, and pieces of wood. These materials will give us lots of opportunities to play with shapes, colors, and textures and to depict people, things, and experiences that are special to us. Together we will explore historical and contemporary mosaics as a springboard for our own creations.
Mandarin

Focusing on themes and stories of interest to children of this age, we’ll work on associated language skills and vocabulary through story-writing and story-telling, art projects, and games. In physical games like “Laoshi Shuo” (teacher says), students learn to follow and give directions while their minds and bodies are engaged. Campers will have the opportunity to practice communicating with each other in cooperative group activities. We will learn and sing songs too! Campers will be exposed to simplified Chinese characters, with emphasis placed on reading and writing in pinyin. Each session will build on vocabulary and skills learned in the previous session, but can also stand alone. Students with and without previous exposure to Mandarin are welcome!
Modern Dance

The basics of modern, such as fall and recovery, swings, and under/over-curves, will be covered along with kinesiological principles. Children will also be encouraged to invent their own movements and shapes.

It’s hard to believe but some of our favorite songs don’t have videos that go along with them. So, we’re going to fix that by making our own! If you like dancing and telling stories with your body, then this is the class for you.
Origami

Did you know that the word origami actually means “folded paper”? In this class, we will start by learning the basic folds needed to make most origami figures. We will then use those folding techniques to create animals, hanging mobiles, 3D shapes, and more. Projects will become more advanced as the class progresses.

We will be using paper as our primary medium to explore different techniques of collage and bookmaking. Learning different kinds of folding and binding techniques, campers will walk away with a variety of handmade books.

Campers in this class will use photography to brainstorm and answer questions like, what is my New York? Is it a crowded street or a new tree? A funny dog or a tall building? We’ll talk about what images mean, how cameras work, and how to use photography to portray feelings and opinions. We will use digital cameras, go on photography walks, and work with images on computers! (8 and up)

Using games like Quantum Soccer and Gravity Buster, we will not only have an amazing time but we will also learn a little about the laws of the universe. So, if you’ve ever wondered where gravity comes from, or you want to try some new, fun games, this class is for you.

Printmaking

Get ready to make glue-drip reliefs, potato prints, sculptural prints, t-shirt designs, and more! In this class, campers will draw, sketch, and explore early Printmaking techniques. Campers will design images, work plates, and edition prints on a variety of papers and surfaces creating innovative 2D and 3D multiples.
Science Explorers

Some of the most important questions scientists ask are “why” and “how,” which are the very questions kids like you love to ask. We’ll look at mysteries as close to us as how our own senses work to those further away such as how bees find their way in the world or how volcanoes work. We will do experiments and hands-on projects to hone our skills for discovery.

Come have fun while learning the basics of singing. We will learn how to warm up the voice, sing different styles of music, and sing alone as well as in a group.
Site-Specific Dance

In the wonderful tradition of site-specific and installation choreographic work (some of which we will watch together), we will create dances in various spaces within the building and in close proximity outside as well as make sculptural landscapes with found objects. Then, we will create videos of our dances so that we can watch and discuss them.

In this class, we will explore the basics of soccer, the world’s game! We will all gain an appreciation of the game while we learn to work together, use our feet, and build an understanding of the rules. Join us and see how fun it is to dribble, pass, and shoot.

This class is an introduction to music in different languages. Learn about other countries and explore their songs and traditions.
Swimming
We swim in an indoor, heated swimming pool in collaboration with the 14th St. YMCA. Swimming will consist of a 30 to 40-minute lesson taught by three fully-certified instructors, followed by free swim time. Campers will take a short ride by private bus to the pool. An on-site lifeguard as well as certified instructors and several camp counselors will supervise all swim time. The program maintains a 1:5 staff-to-camper ratio for ages seven and up.

Kids will have the opportunity to work on character in a safe and playful space. Activities will include games and structured improvisations such as Who’s Coming to the Party and Taxi Cab. This class is open to kids who are curious about theater as well as those who already know they like to perform.

Waterworks

It’s hot but we’re not! Our goal is to create elaborate water works on the roof at LREI. We will engineer the wackiest, goofiest, most creative sprinklers, fountains, and hoses imaginable . . . And then we’ll test them out! Bring your swimming suits, thinking caps, and blueprints. We’ll supply the whozits, whatzits, gadgets, buckets, gizmos, and toys!
Word Play

For all you book-loving, budding wordsmiths, a class dedicated to playing with words. We’ll “warm up” by playing classic word games like Balderdash, Scrabble, Jumble, and Scattergories then make zany language creations like mad libs and chain stories. We’ll try writing alone and in groups, backward and forward, up and down. Imagination required!
World Art

Be an art explorer throughout the world as we find inspiration from other cultures to make our artwork. We will look at art from every continent and create works of art using a variety of materials in both three-dimensional and two-dimensional forms.
