"Savor the Moment"

Faith Hunter
How many times have we all been reminded to “savor the moment”? Or been told that “the kids grow up before you know it”? I know I often need these reminders to slow things down and enjoy life. As l watch my kids grow up, I want to make sure I take the time to create memories every holiday season and to reflect on the past year as I anticipate the new chapter that begins in January.

This year, I cannot help but think about how proud I am to have joined a school with such a profound history and such a commitment to shaping the future. On a daily basis, I find myself humbled to sit in the very room once occupied by our founder Elisabeth Irwin, whose groundbreaking vision of an education that is child-centered and rooted in inclusivity — long before either concept was in vogue — inspires our community every day.

In the past four months, I have fallen in love 219 times over, one for each child in the Lower School. With each “Good morning, Faith!” as your children walk into the Lower School, each high-five in the hallway, and each smile and unexpected hug, I realize my life has been blessed because you have generously entrusted your children to me and the talented teachers I work with. I am grateful for bonding on the third and fourth grade farm trips, watching four-year-old faces light up during home visits, witnessing fourth graders step up to run Lower School Gatherings, and the countless other incredible moments of watching our young students grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, and community members.

We ended the year with a moment that I — and your children, I hope — will treasure for a long time: our first pajama day. Three weeks ago, we set a goal to lift up our community by being more respectful in the halls. We worked diligently and collaboratively. We succeeded. And we took a moment to look back at what we achieved, to think about how our community was better off for it — and to celebrate, with pajamas for all. Evident in the students’ excitement to spend time with their lower school buddies, it is true that bonds run deep among our students.

I wish you a restorative winter break full of the things that mean the most to you. Thank you for choosing this special school and for entrusting us with your children.
