MS Robotics Team Visits Liam Cohen '13 at MIT Campus

LREI
Last week the middle school robotics team, at the invitation of LREI alum and former team member Liam Cohen '13, visited the MIT campus.
While there the team were able to watch a number of demonstrations of culminating projects in robotics and engineering from MIT students.  These demos included seeing bots that were mapping maze-like areas in an attempt to find their way out, drones who were using multiple cameras to explore a space and attempt to land on a target, and race bots that were finding their way around a course in the fastest lap times.  All of these were programmed to function autonomously. There were opportunities to tour the campus and labs, and to hear from Liam about his own work with graphene and nanotechnology.

The students that our team encountered were all incredibly gracious with their time and efforts, with more than one engaging the middle school students to discuss their projects, show videos of other work, give insight into what MIT life is like and more.  Our LREI students were fascinated with many of the things they saw and some of the possibilities that they represented. There were a lot of questions asked and some really interesting experiences had, including visiting a work space that MIT students use for projects outside of their classes, where the middle schoolers got to test out a little three-wheeled motorized cart and see a 7 ft tall Tesla coil shoot off bolts of electricity.  After a visit to the MIT museum the next morning, which included an exhibit on the evolution leading to the same LEGO robotics materials they use now, the team came back home, still processing an overwhelming experience but buzzing with all they’d seen.

Special thanks to our Robotics Coach and Teacher Jeremiah Demster for leading this trip.
