Looking Forward to the 2017-18 School Year

With the 2017-18 school year upon us, we asked faculty and staff to share what they are most looking forward to at LREI!

I'm looking forward to seeing our newly enrolled 9th graders walking the halls, talking to their teachers and new friends as if they've been here forever. –Jessica Acee, Director of HS Admissions
 
I am looking forward to learning new ideas and concepts with my students.  I am always impressed by their thoughts and ideas.  I am also excited to work with the Black students this year as an ongoing affinity group. I'm looking forward to so many things! - learning more about what it means to be a human being, factors that led to the rise of ancient civilizations, desires that motivate the characters in our books, and the themes that emerge in our writer’s notebooks that provide a lens for thinking more deeply about the patterns that shape human experience, and the action we can take to make the world a kinder place for all beings. –Megan Ashforth, 5th Grade Humanities Teacher

Every year in the art studio is different, and this year I'm looking forward to not only trying some new projects, but also trying new ways to get kids thinking visually and creatively.  I'm excited for a new schedule that gives us a little more time for 5th and 6th grade art too.  I'm also happy to be back coaching soccer and robotics, and feel good about where the teams are at! –Jeremiah Demster, MS Visual Arts Teacher
 
I am looking forward to watching students make the library their own. Whether they are lying on their bellies reading comics, crafting during Maker Mondays, recommending books to friends, or coming in to say hi to the librarians...our space is only truly alive when it's filled with kids! –Stacy Dillon, Lower School Librarian
 
I am looking most forward to connecting with new students - working, learning and growing with them, as well as reconnecting with previous years students (who always amaze me how much they grow over the summer). I love the beginning of each school year. I am most looking forward to really knowing my students. That student-teacher relationship is invaluable. I also love the moments when my students feel comfortable enough to take risks and try things that are new or challenging. What constitutes a "risk" is different for everyone. I love noticing those opportunities for bravery and supporting my students in being courageous. –Diane Kidder, Fours Head Teacher

I’m excited to see the personal growth in students. The summer allows time for reflection; it’s exciting to see their maturation. I am most looking forward to welcoming students, families and faculty into our newly renovated library space! We have removed the old reference desk and desktop computers to create more seating and study station for students, families and faculty. Our popular graphic novels section has been moved and expanded, so students can find the comic adventures they're looking for quickly and easily. I look forward to explore Chinese culture and language with students through theme-based topics and student centered discussion in the classroom. With classes focus on discovering meaning behind Chinese traditions and characters, students will learn how to communicate ideas in authentic language forms. –Jessica Tan, HS Mandarin Teacher
