Middle school soccer wins championship

Team beats St. Luke's in overtime shoot-out
The LREI Middle School Soccer Team won their first-ever championship in the DISC League on Thursday, beating St. Luke’s 3-2 in an intense contest ending in an overtime penalty shoot-out.

The Knights went into the game, the season’s finals, with extra motivation to beat St. Luke’s, who had already beat the team twice in the regular season. Eighth grader Reggi C. scored his 20th goal of the season to take an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, St. Luke's scored to tie the game. St. Luke's then took the lead in the second half, scoring on a corner kick deflection.

There was little opportunity for the Knights to catch up until the final three minutes of the game. However, all shots went wide of the goal or directly into the keeper’s possession. It wasn’t until the referee shouted out “30 seconds left,” that LREI found hope. The team was awarded a corner kick and sent all players, including our own goalkeeper (eighth grader Nissim H.) to the box. The ball came in, bounced around, and sixth grader Eli H. was able to knock it in to tie the game 2-2. The huge crowd of parents, teachers, kids and coaches went bonkers!

The game continued into overtime with a penalty shoot-out. Nissim saved the last shot to give LREI the 3-2 victory. Click to view more team photos from this season.
