Welcome to the Middle School

We are a place of bold questions, big ideas, and meaningful work. A place where students are deeply known: by their teachers, their peers, and, by the end of eighth grade, themselves.

We believe challenge should feel alive. It’s in the complexity of a text that sparks debate, the construction of a math model that mirrors real-world constraints, or the research that leads a student into the heart of a question they truly care about. Our curriculum is built on inquiry and designed to connect disciplines, encourage experimentation, and demand reflection.

This is school as it should be: collaborative, rigorous, and purposeful.

You’ll find sixth graders reconstructing the growth of belief systems by studying geographical trade routes and religious tenets. Seventh graders investigating climate change and designing scale models for a more resilient New York City. Eighth graders leading peer teach-ins and presenting original fieldwork on urgent political, social, and economic issues that they care about.

Throughout, students are supported by educators who know them well and take them seriously. LREI teachers don’t just deliver content; they build learning experiences that help students wrestle with complexity, revise their thinking, and grow into their own voices.

Ours is a community that welcomes students as they are — and asks them to stretch. We prepare them not just for high school, but for the world, and all of its uncertainty, that they’re stepping into.

These criteria are as much a part of our days with the children as math, Mandarin, reading, and dance. Trying something new won't always be comfortable. We don’t promise that everyone will always be nice, but this school is a place where we are committed to leaving no one in the shadows — teachers are here to listen, to encourage respect and kindness, and to model it ourselves. Expect school to be eventful. Expect the unexpected, but know it is safe.

Across the Middle School

Life in the Middle School is built from more than academic classes. The structures below — designed with intention — create the rhythms, relationships, and opportunities that help students grow into themselves.
