Ann joined the faculty at LREI in 2013, but has taught high school history and government since 1992. She teaches 10th grade U.S. History as well as electives including Constitutional Law, American Elections, the Contemporary Middle East, the Italian Renaissance, and the History of New York. Ann earned a B.A. in Political Science and Ancient History from Boston University, and an M.A. in teaching from Simmons University in Boston. She also completed her coursework in the Masters of Liberal Arts program at Harvard University Extension School. In addition to teaching, she advises the Student Government, serves as coordinator for The Coffee House program, and has been a Junior Trip leader since the inception of the program in 2016. She regularly offers courses in the school’s AdultRed evening enrichment program.
Charlene joined the history department faculty at LREI in 2018. She teaches U.S. History to the tenth grade as well as upper-level elective courses on the sociology of education, the history of racist ideas in the U.S., social movements, the history of immigration, and the history of the Asian American and Latin American diasporas. Charlene earned a B.A. in Political Science (focus on American Politics) and Journalism (print journalism) from Rutgers University as well as a Master’s and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania (focus on racial and social class inequities in education). She also serves as faculty mentor to the Latinx and Students of Color affinity groups, as well as Debate Club. Since 2020, Charlene has served as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion facilitator for the high school division.
Michelde Konkoly Thege
Special Assistant to Administration and High School History & English Teacher
Michel de Konkoly Thege joined the high school faculty in 2015 as a history teacher after serving as LREI’s assistant head of school and chief financial officer for 13 years. Among the courses taught by Michel are The Late Medieval World and Dante’s Inferno, Vietnam’s Struggle for Independence, and European Revolutions, as well as 9th grade World History. Michel has a B.A. and an M.Phil from Wesleyan University and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Michel has been a Junior Trip leader since the inception of this program in 2016. He is also an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University – Teachers College, where he teaches a class on school finance in the Klingenstein program for Private School Leadership.
Brian joined the LREI faculty in 2021. He teaches World Literature and electives including Modern and Contemporary American Poetry, Surrealist Literature, Documentary Poetics, as well as writing workshops in various genres. He holds a B.A. in Literary Studies and Writing from The New School and an M.A. in Adolescent English Education from Hunter College. In addition to teaching, he is a SEED co-facilitator, an advisor, and a coach for the high school boys’ soccer team.

High School History Teacher, Tenth Grade Dean and History Department Chair
Tom joined the faculty at LREI in September of 2001. Each year he teaches a world history class to 9th graders and a slate of electives to 11th and 12th graders. His course list continues to evolve but almost always includes the following: Economics and Public Policy, Terrorism from 9/11 to Now, The Cold War and the Modern World, Morality and Ideology in the 20th Century, and Democracy in Action (a civics-based current events class). Tom received a B.A. in Political Science from Catholic University, a Graduate Diploma from the London School of Economics in Political Economy, and a Masters in International Politics and Economic Development from Fordham University. Presently, he is the history department chair, the dean of the 10th grade, and the coordinator of the Model UN club.
Emily is new to LREI in 2021, joining the faculty as a history teacher. She teaches 9th grade World History and electives including Environmental History, Global Controversies, Comparative Religions, and Human Rights in the 21st Century. Emily earned a B.A. in History from Carleton College and a Master of Arts in Education from Hamline University. She is also a 9th grade advisor and is excited to explore other opportunities to be involved in the LREI community outside of the classroom.
