From Fours through Fourth Grade, a love of reading and writing is cultivated and celebrated. The youngest student is exposed to sounds and symbols beginning with songs, rhymes, and are naturally surrounded by print as they make their lunch choices and read the morning message. Across the years, the children are instructed in a balance of phonic and literature instruction, emphasizing comprehension. Books, enjoyed individually and shared in large and small groups, are read to enhance curriculum as well as for pure engagement.
Writing materials are plentiful and children are encouraged to write for authentic reasons from early dramatic play shopping lists through to fourth grade’s political editorials. All types of written expression are encouraged and children learn to write for various purposes, whether it be a classroom label, a hallway sign, a story, a newspaper article, a poem, a narrative, or a research project. The basics of print and cursive are taught using Handwriting Without Tears. Spelling, sentence formation, development of paragraphs are all explicitly addressed, often embedded in lessons of the major topic of study, with a developmental progression, building from one grade to the next.
Learning to communicate verbally has always been a strong focus at LREI. From the earliest grades, children are encouraged to speak in a group, share ideas, and listen to others. Throughout the years in the lower school, children learn how to listen to their peers in order to expand their thinking. They also learn how to negotiate social situations, and how to communicate effectively both with their peers and the adults around them.
