Social Studies

Social Studies is a cornerstone of learning in Lower School. In a progression that parallels students' naturally expanding interest, their circle of study is expanded from the school community in early childhood, the neighborhood in first grade, all of our great city in second grade, New York of long ago in third grade, and the complex historical journeys of people and cultures in fourth grade. Common threads throughout social studies include the role of individuals and their stories, principles of mapping and geography, the interdependence of community, and raising questions of social justice.
