Playing against a tough Berkeley Carroll team, the ladies of LREI played very well, but leaked too many goals, losing 2-5. The game was a tale of two halves, with a score of 1-5 at half time. The lone LREI goal came on a penalty kick opportunity created by sophomore Finley Martin, which senior Jacey Mossack calmly buried for her seventh of the season. The defensive line, consisting of junior Hannah Rodriguez, seniors Grace Gold and Rene Servisi, and sophomore Maxine Guttmann, played a tough game, but were beaten by great shots from the BC forwards. Also playing a great game in multiple spots on the field was sophomore Hazel Hutchins, who has not missed a minute of game action this season for the Knights, and who managed to score the lone goal of the second half for either team. Forcing a turnover in the offensive third of the field for LREI, Hutchins took on a defender and chipped the rushing keeper from a very difficult angle for quite possibly the goal of the season for the EI team. Despite winning the second half 1-0, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
With no games left the Lady Knights are bidding a sad goodbye to senior captains Jacey Mossack (starting forward; 7 goals, 1 assist), Rene Servisi (starting central defender; 1 goal, 1 assist), and Grace Gold (starting central defender; 1 goal; All-league in 2011).
The team finished the season with a record of 3-6-1 (2-4-1 in league), having scored 18 goals, which is more than twice that of the 2011 total. They also gave up fewer goals (27 to last year’s 38) and had five more girls net than last season (8 to last year’s 3).
While three very important players are leaving due to graduation, and important sophomore Maxine Guttmann expected to relocate overseas, there is still a deep roster of 17 expected returners, including 3 juniors, 8 sophomores, and 6 freshmen.
