Prior to kickoff of the nonleague matchup between the ladies of LREI, clad in their usual red, and the ladies in white from Trevor Day school, the lowering sun caused the massive shadow of the RFK Triborough Bridge to lay across the length of field #75 on Randall’s Island. As the teams warmed up, the shadow crawled across from one touchline to the other.
The feeling on the EI side was one of nervous energy. The girls were ready to play as always, but the team was missing 5 important members of their usual 20-player squad, including two starters on the defensive line, one of which was captain Hazel Hutchins, who has played nearly every minute of every game in her career with LREI, now in it’s fourth season. Also missing were two junior midfielders and on junior defender. And on the other side was Trevor Day, a squad against which the Knights were 0-4 in previous matchups stretching back three seasons, including 2 games when LREI played in the NYSAL during the 2011 season.
But the reds of EI certainly did not play nervous on the day. When the ball was tipped off there were a few moments of pressure from Trevor, but LREI quickly played themselves into the game through possession and smart movement. There were several players who were shuffled around in response to the absences, but each played extremely well. From the outset senior Ana Maroto, deputizing for Hutchins both in the center of defense and as a captain, played her usual gritty and intelligent game. She directed traffic, passed effectively, and cut out several dangerous balls. Playing ahead of her in the center of midfield Ally Klemer put in a fantastic shift breaking up plays and launching attacks. Her tireless efforts in covering the back four meant that Trevor wasn’t ever truly able to gain any rhythm in their forward efforts.
Both of the goals would come in the first half. Klemer would send a ball into the box from her deep midfield spot. Speedy senior forward Diandra Adu-Kyei played the bounce agressivley, getting just the slightest touch on the ball. The Trevor keeper saved her toe poke, but the two would collide. Sophomore midfielder Lucy Tamarkin pounced upon the loose ball and swept it into the gaping net. The second tally was a truly team effort. Senior midfielder Finley Martin, who has grown into the attacking spot in the middle of the LREI formation over the last three years after moving in from the wing, was more than a match physically for Trevor, and her passing was both controlled and dangerous. She would start the second movement from deep in her own half, picking up a loose ball and charging through the middle before sliding a ball into space towards the left of the attack. As the team pressed forward several players made runs that opened up the space that would be capitalized upon by freshman Rachel Morrow. Bought time by both her striking partner and both outside midfielders, Morrow controlled the forward pass inside the box and laid it back towards the top of the arc for the onrushing Martin. She would take one touch to control and then drive the ball towards the far post.
The LREI defense was particularly sturdy given its patchwork nature, and it never truly cracked. For the third game in a row sophomore Minnie Hutchins managed to not only position herself in all the right places, but also to use calm passing to help the team keep possession where a lesser player would have been panicked into just trying to clear the lines. Senior Maxine Guttmann kept herself in smart positions and worked well with the right of midfield to prevent the repeated efforts of the opposition to come down her side. Junior Amelia Pinney, slid back from the outside of midfield on the left into the defensive line, played an especially smart game keeping the ball at her feet and recycling into the midfield.
Trevor would add a late goal off of a corner kick scramble as time ran out, but it was the only time they would get past junior goalkeeper Sara Caplan, who would finish the day with 13 saves, a career high for her.
