Knights Battle, but Dragons Prevail

Steiner defeats LREI 3-0
Yesterday afternoon we traveled to Thomas Jefferson Park to take on Steiner. We had a good warm up, came out focused, and battled hard. Steiner is a perennial top team in our league, and it showed. They were big and played a physical game. They scored on a nice volley in the 5th minute to take the 1-0 lead. We were very aggressive attacking their defense, but the short and narrow field cut down on our ability to utilize our speed, and their big defenders did a good job of plugging up the gaps. After they scored a second goal in the 19th minute on a frustrating deflection, we compounded our mistake, and immediately allowed a third goal following a defensive miscue in the back. Although we continued to fight hard throughout the rest of the 1st half, we entered the 2nd down 3-0. Our defense really tightened up in the 2nd half, particularly with respect to containing their strikers rather than diving in, as we did not concede another goal. However, even though we had some good chances, we simply could not crack the Steiner defense, and we took the loss 3-0.
