High School Program

In ninth and tenth grade, LREI students participate in a foundational core curriculum designed to prepare them for the advanced electives program in their junior and senior years. Ninth graders take World History, World Literature, Chemistry, Integrated Math 9, World Language (French, Spanish or Mandarin), and arts classes. Tenth graders continue with American History, American Literature, Physics, Integrated Math 10, World Language and arts electives that allow for deeper specialization and creative exploration.

Across disciplines, students strengthen their skills in analytical writing, close reading, scientific inquiry, quantitative reasoning, research, collaboration, and discussion-based learning. Through rigorous, inquiry-driven coursework, students learn to think critically, solve complex problems, and make meaningful connections across subject areas.

Just as importantly, ninth and tenth grade students are supported in developing a sense of belonging and responsibility within the LREI community. The ninth grade orientation trip and peer leadership program help students build meaningful relationships from the start of high school, while tenth graders begin taking on leadership roles through athletics, student activities, X-blocks, as well as other opportunities across school life.

Life Lab in ninth and tenth grade provides students with dedicated space to explore topics such as health and wellness, media literacy, digital citizenship, identity, relationships, and decision-making, helping students navigate the social and emotional complexities of high school with greater confidence and self-awareness. Together, these experiences foster the confidence, curiosity, and sense of citizenship that prepare students for the rigor and independence of LREI’s advanced upper school electives.

LREI’s eleventh grade elective program offers students the opportunity to pursue sustained, interdisciplinary academic exploration. After completing foundational coursework in grades nine and ten, students select from a wide range of advanced electives designed to foster analytical thinking, creativity, and scholarly independence.

Course offerings span disciplines and methodologies and students are challenged to contribute thoughtfully to academic discourse and community life. In addition to expanded course choice, many classes include both eleventh and twelfth grade students, creating opportunities for deeper academic challenge and engagement.

As juniors begin shaping their own academic trajectory, they work closely with advisors to create a balanced and appropriately challenging program that reflects their interests, strengths, and future goals. The increased flexibility of the elective system encourages students to deepen specific strands of inquiry, take intellectual risks, and develop a stronger sense of ownership over their learning.

Junior Class Trip

A defining element of eleventh grade is the Junior Class Trip experience, a year-long interdisciplinary research project that culminates in a place-based travel experience. Through research, collaboration, and fieldwork, students examine contemporary social, political, environmental, and cultural issues while considering their own relationship to the wider world and their capacity to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The twelfth grade year at LREI focuses on final preparation and reflection. Seniors assume significant leadership in the classroom and the broader school community as peer leaders and student government representatives.

Senior Project

The Senior Project is a significant piece of original work in the field of each students’ choice. It is the culmination of each student’s career at LREI and takes place during the final trimester of senior year. Faculty advisors work closely with all seniors to help them design and plan an internship or creative project. The Senior Project has four major components: experiential, written, intellectual, and service.
