Since its founding over 100 years ago, LREI has operated from the belief that children learn through shared experience and meaningful work.
We engage students in a lifelong practice of encountering complex problems, examining them critically and collaboratively, and generating a range of ideas and solutions together. Through a rigorous academic program led by skilled and dedicated faculty, students are supported in applying their learning creatively and are encouraged to stretch beyond what is familiar and comfortable.
Why? Our students are moving from LREI towards a challenging changing world, and we aim to prepare learners who are ready not only for what’s next, but for what’s possible.
Beginning at age four, LREI students build mathematical understanding through block play. As their structures grow in complexity and creativity, they develop intuitive foundations for mathematics, coding, architecture, design thinking, and engineering.
By fourth grade, students draw on their mathematical and computational understanding, along with growing skills in collaboration, creativity, and iterative problem-solving, to design challenges and build robots capable of meeting them.
By seventh grade, LREI students are now highly sophisticated thinkers. They have academic prowess, and are confident in tackling new challenges. They work in the Co-Laboratory testing their design thinking skills as they prototype, iterate, and construct solutions to complex issues such as climate change.
By senior year, LREI students design their own capstone projects: a six-week, self-directed experience that blends research, creativity, community engagement, and reflection. They pursue areas of personal interest with growing confidence, demonstrating skills in critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving, planning, collaboration, and iteration.
Projects range widely, from internships at advertising agencies to composing and releasing an EP, producing an art exhibition, or building a robot.
What begins as curiosity becomes a lifetime of capability, confidence, and contribution. Fourteen years of learning, questioning, and creating lead students toward a life of purpose beyond LREI.
