LREI Girls Jump On Hewitt Early And Often To Get First Win Of 2019

J.Demster
Both Josie Parks and Cassidy Moskowitz hit the net twice, and senior Olivia Roederer added one of her own to give the Knights a convincing win, and a little redemption from last season.
In the first ever meeting of these two teams last season Hewitt used a second half breakout to handle the Knights fairly easily in the last game of the regular season for LREI. Lily Parks scored a nice goal fairly late on in the game, but it was the only Knights goal in the game.

This season the game against Hewitt came much earlier in the schedule and after two very tough losses for the team last week. But LREI used those two games as an opportunity to work on their own shape and fluidity, and it showed as they broke out in this game on both ends of the field. They combined a smothering defensive effort with a flurry of goals going forward.

Right from the first whistle the front line had Hewitt’s defenders under pressure. Senior midfielder Olivia Roederer was able to play through gaps to all three of the attackers in front of her due to their quick thinking and quick running that made spaces. The first goal game in the 8th minute when she played in forward Cassidy Moskowitz who drove at the keeper and slotted to the far post. Two minutes later midfielder Josie Parks would play her own slide pass for Moskowitz to finish. The goals are her second and third on the season. A minute later left midfielder Lily Parks drove down towards the endline and played a ball back for Roederer to slam home with a long drive of a shot. The initial onslaught was capped off by Josie Parks, with Moskowitz playing the assist, in the 14th minute.

All of LREI’s success going forward was built on a defense and midfield that was committed to covering up the center of the park and keeping the ball high up the field. Defensive midfielders Sarah Katz and Leah Maathey both played an incredibly disciplined game, linking the back and front fours and clogging lanes, which forced the opposition out wide time and time again. Hewitt tried to run down LREI’s right side the most, but the combination of right back Ana Ziebarth and centerback Charlotte Peyser kept play moving towards the corners, and Hewitt only really had one dangerous chance, which goalkeeper Ciara McNamara brilliantly saved with a brave challenge.

The game was largely over through most of the second half, and the Knights were able to keep play almost exclusively on their attacking half. The team would finish off one more goal to cap a completely dominant performance.

This week is also Play with Pride week, which is a nationwide initiative by United Soccer Coaches LGBT & Allies Advocacy Group to raise and represent support for athletes and coaches all across the gender and sexuality spectrums. We will be wearing rainbow laces, and at the end of the week the team will make a donation to the organization based on our results. The Knights play again on Wednesday this week. Their opponent will be ISAL matchup Avenues.
