LREI Get Fifth Win In A Row And Third Straight League Win Vs BWL

J.Demster
Cassidy Moskowitz got her eleventh and twelth goals of the season, and LREI took care of business in their third straight league win this season. Leah Maathey, Mia Schulte, and Jane Olsen also tallied in the victory.
At kickoff on Thursday the sky was overcast, the rain was just starting to come down in a slow drizzle and the air was the coldest it’s been at any game this season. So it would have been easy for the Knights to have come out slow and flat. But it only took 90 seconds for LREI to get on the board, and it was a lead they would never relinquish on their way to their third league win of 2019. They now sit in sole posession of 1st place in the ISAL with half their league schedule left.

The opener came from forward Cassidy Moskowitz, her 11th goal of the season. She would finish the game with one more. She leads the team in scoring with 12 goals in 6 games across all competition, and 8 goals in the team’s 3 league games. Midfielder Leah Maathey would hit the goal that would prove to be the game winner in the 11th minute, taking a drop pass from winger Mawena Tafa and hitting a 20+ yard blast to the far post. BWL would knock a ball into their own net after midfielder Sarah Katz hit a ball forward and into a dangerous area.

BWL did have a few chances that they generated with some agressive play and tricky dribbling. But goalkeeper Sofia Sharp was more than equal to the shots she faced. Her organizing of the defense and secure hands have been big for the Knights on several occasions this season. The few chances BWL managed to generate in that first half were from dangerous areas. But Sharp smothered everything that came her way.

LREI’s dominance continued in the second half, with forward Mia Schulte getting on the scoresheet 4 minutes after the restart on a ball played in by captain Jane Olsen, who would get a goal of her own in the 59th minute after fighting for a ball right on the goal line.

Defender Emily Nally was particularly busy on her left side in the second half. She faced off against a couple speedy players, but was equal to it and was impressively calm on the ball and able to feed the midfielders to keep play going forward. Another good defender on the day was Ana Ziebarth. Ziebarth, who is one of only three players to start every game for the Knights this season, has played at both outside back and centerback in 2019. Today she was playing in the center, and her smart positioning helped sheperd the ball into less dangerous areas.

BWL did manage one tally of their own. A high lofted ball hit the back post and there was some confusion as to whether it had crossed the line or not. After a moment’s pause the referee blew his whistle and awarded the opponenets a goal. But it was too little too late to make a dent in the LREI lead.

LREI are now 5-2 on the season, and 3-0 in the ISAL. They hold sole posession of 1st place, but still have challengers Leman Manhattan and Dwight to play. But their next game is against nonleague Grace Church on Friday, October 4th.
