Fifth Straight ISAL Win Gives LREI Control OF Their Own Destiny

J.Demster
Downing York Prep means that LREI are undefeated so far this season in the ISAL. York Proved to be scrappy, but ultimately fell to a dominating performance that the Knights will draw confidence from.
It was a wide open game against bottom of the league York Prep. Senior midfielder Olivia Roederer was one of the best players on the field for the day, finding large pockets of space and picking out LREI runners into gaps in the York backline. Numerous times she would drift into the center, call for the ball, smoothly pivot forward and spray a dangerous ball to one of her wingers. It was no surprise when the first goal came from her feeding the frontline. Leading scorer Cassidy Moskowitz held her run onside and slid the well weighted pass right into the net. Moskowitz would create her own chance three minutes later when she stripped a center back just outside the York penalty area and raced in to make the lead 2. Josie Parks set the score for half time with a beautiful shot to the far upper corner.

York certainly proved scrappy. They had several girls in wide areas that were controlled on the ball, and one young player with dangerous speed. In the second half she moved up the field and became an instant goal threat. Charlotte Peyser scored a fourth for the Knights, but almost immediately York’s young winger pulled off a surprising goal by ripping down the left side of the field and firing off a fast and well-placed shot. It was the only mark on an otherwise excellent defensive day for the Knights. The girls who played at fullback in this game, a group including Olivia Atienza, Dana Katz, Ana Ziebarth and Emily Nally all had notible moments in helping keep the base of the LREI formation solid.

Winger Mia Schulte would put the final nail in as the game came to a close off of a cross from midfielder Sarah Katz. It was a deserved goal for Schulte as she’d gotten herself into good scoring positions more than once. LREI looked good on the day against their fifth ISAL opponent. Undefeated in the league, the Knights next face playoff-bound Dwight on Tuesday at Pier 40. A win would give the team the regular season championship, and the #1 seed going into the semifinals the following week.
