Life in the Middle School

Ana Chaney
Dear Middle School Families,

I hope this note - the last one from me for a little while - finds you all safe and healthy.

Life in the middle school this week maintained its characteristic energy and purpose despite our many serious health-related conversations and precautions. Yesterday, for example, the fifth graders transformed the third floor into an Egyptian archeological dig site and gave tours of the artifacts buried there, and the shadufs along the banks of the Nile.

Maybe some of the playfulness and flexibility of middle schoolers rubs off on us, the adults who spend time with them. Maybe it works the other way around. Either way, I have been deeply moved by the work of the teachers over the past week. In the midst of all that they already do, they have carved out a few hours here and a few hours there, followed by today's full day of learning and prepping, to create distance learning plans for LREI@home. And they have done it with good humor, and the full force of their substantial intellect and heart. As I step in to these conversations, instead of trepidation, I hear teachers commenting about how excited they are, what units they are developing for this format, and structures they're developing to support students. I personally feel so lucky to work among them, and so grateful for the work they are doing and will do with your children.

Please follow this link for details about the plans for LREI@home. Please note that if your child is enrolled in any Afterschool Programs, these will meet, on the usual days and times, online. Find more information when you click on Afterschool on the link given above. More communication about the Middle School's LREI@home plan will follow if and when we launch, but we wanted those who were interested to have this opportunity to see some specifics. In the meantime, I wish you all a safe and happy spring break. Don't hesitate to be in touch with any questions.

Best,
